PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Vitamin D supplements have traditionally used to promote calcium absorption. Recent research has shown that it has a widening range of therapeutic applications indicated by the discovery of vitamin D receptors in many different tissues in the body, including breast, prostate and others.
A physiological link exists between vitamins A and D, but excess vitamin A may be counter productive. Therefore, the product contains pro-vitamin A (beta-carotene), which enables the body to produce on demand as much vitamin A as it requries.
Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. However, once absorbed, it is necessary to direct the calcium to the appropriate tissues to prevent calcification of unwanted tissues. For this purpose, vitamin K is necessary. In the presence of vitamin K deficiency, calcium is deposited in the artery walls causing hardening of the arteries which may have many health consequences. In the presence of vitamin K, the calcium is deposited in the bones rather than in unwanted tissues.

INDICATIONS
Sub-optimal levels of vitamin D. Patients with rickets, osteomalacia (also rickets), osteoporosis, muscle cramps and muscle weakness. Current research suggests that vitamin D may also be involved as a causal factor of hypertension, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

CONTRA INDICATIONS
Patients on anticoagulant (blood thinning) therapy.

WARNINGS
May promote blood clotting in susceptible patients. Do not exceed dosage levels of 1000iu (2 capsules) daily in young children.

INTERACTIONS
High doses may cause hypercalcaemia with increased risk of tissue calcification. The risk is increased by the concurrent use of drugs which may cause hypercalcaemia (e.g. thiazide diuretics). High doses also increase the risk of arythmias in patients on digoxin therapy.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Safe at normal dosage levels. Hypercalcemia may result from excessive dosage and this in turn may cause suppression of parathyroid hormone with predictable consequences.

DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS OF USE
Most adults require between 4000 and 8000 iu of vitamin D3 per day from all sources to maintain healthy blood levels of 30 to 70ng / ml. Recommended initial dosage is one to two capsules per day with meals. Dosage should be adjusted thereafter to maintain optimum blood levels of vitamin D of 30 to 70ng / ml. 1IU vit. D = .025mcg vit. D.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
May promote blood clotting in susceptible patients.

KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
Excessive dosage may result in hypercalcemia.
